Alkina Polygon 3 Grenache X Pedro Parra from Alkina on Vimeo.
A singular expression of Grenache from Polygon 3, a tiny patch of our old vineyard that we have studied extensively and picked and vinified separately. An ethereal, lifted style with complex red fruit and spice overlaid on its mineral background and a great sense of energy on the palate.
Polygon No. 3 is just 0.274 hectares in size and contains approximately 200 vines. Working with terroir specialist, Pedro Parra, we identified this polygon to be unique in its limestone content. There is shallow red-brown earth over deep chalky sedimentary limestone which contains fractured schist and the limited presence of iron. NASAA certified organic and biodynamic.
Etheral, rare Grenache grown on a superior patch of limestone.

"Gentle sweetness of tangy red fruit – but not the sweetness of very ripe Grenache as this is more al dente – plus a flinty elegance and a touch of citrus and wild herbs, on the verge of floral. Juicy and intensely fresh, a coiled, dry energy and really tight, chalky freshness. A light note of dusty minerality. Super-fine tannins add to the freshness. And very long. Bright but not sweet except in tangy red fruit. Mouth-watering and so finely textured. Tender and vibrant. ‘Reactive tannins’, as Antonini calls them. You could pretty much drink this now though there’s no hurry."

"After mapping and separating the Alkina vineyard in Greenock into tiny patches known as polygons, based on varying geologies, the winemaking team has made tiny amounts from the most distinctive of them in what they deem the results of intense research and extreme commitment. The prices of their Polygon wines reflect this and their rarity. From a limestone-based section of just 200 grenache vines, this is made in much the same manner as all the Alkina wines, here 50% whole bunch fermented in one concrete tulip before 15 months maturation in 10-year-old barrels. Delightfully red-fruit juicy, subtly spiced with a surround of chalky tannins, imbued with energy, the balance of all involved elements delivers a purity of intent as well as fabulous drinking pleasure."

"Red and purples. There is a complex yet glorious aroma to this wine. Blueberries, spices, chocolate. Wonderfully fragrant. the texture is compellingly supple. Finely balanced and with a pleasing flick of vibrant acidity. Cherries emerge on the palate and a tobacco-leaf/cigar-box note (reminiscent of a fine Cohiba Siglo VI). Chalky the tannins might be, but they quickly dissolve into something wonderfully cushiony and gentle. Elegance personified. A superb Grenache."
